Mercedes-Benz Follows Bmw And Jaguar In The Field Of Modular Engines

Inaugurated by the recent E-Class, the new Mercedes modular engine family is moving towards industrial rationalization. The arrival of these blocks should limit the use of the German manufacturer to Renault engines.

Launched in 2008, the four-cylinder diesel OM 651 has been widely used in the Mercedes-Benz range. From the small A-Class to the S-Class limousine, this block that equips almost the entire field has managed to win the title of the most produced engine of the brand at Etoile, in just eight years. His successor, the brand new OM 654, should do even better.

Following the example of its long-time enemy BMW, Mercedes-Benz has just released the first engines from its new modular family. Understand that the different versions will share a maximum of parts, be it gasoline or Diesel, regardless of their number of cylinders. This is in line with the Jaguar-Land Rover Ingenium family or Volvo’s Drive-E family. However, the Germans are targeting much larger volumes, over much more extensive ranges.

Wisely, Mercedes-Benz started with the four-cylinder diesel OM 654, currently available in a single variant single turbo. Developing 194 bhp in the E-Class that opens, this block was designed primarily for longitudinal architectures propulsion. At least in this first execution. The desire to reduce the frontal area of cars and lower their center of gravity has indeed led engineers to design a side exhaust line, while it was under the block before. Result: the width of this set seems hardly compatible with the transverse cradle of Class A, for example, and will require a reworking of the devices for traction of the brand.
